Com`pre`hen´sive: including all or dealing with nearly all elements or aspects of something; thorough and complete---Oxford Dictionary
Our Comprehensive course will provide all the information you need to successfully treat, from diagnosis to case finishing, 80% of the orthodontic cases in your office. There is no need to take additional courses to learn a complete treatment technique. We don't offer Intermediate or Advanced Courses because we present it all in our Comprehensive program, no nickel and diming you! If you need a refresher or want to brush up on a particular mechanic, it is simple and easy to do so. Maintaining a Basic membership to the website grants ongoing access to the online program permanently, making reviews straightforward.
You can earn up to 125 CE credits when and where it is convenient for you, with no deadlines and no expiration dates. No need to take time away from your practice and your family, and no need for unnecessary travel expenses. Our classes are available 24/7/365, and you can review as often as you like and use the program to train your staff!
Each session of our online Comprehensive Ortho Program follows the same format as the classroom program, including a lecture/slide presentation, case presentations, a video demonstration of the project mechanics and techniques, and instructions for completing the project. The sessions deliver information sequentially, similar to treatment delivery. They are divided into short segments to fit different schedules and can be paused and reviewed as needed. To complete a session, watch each lecture, complete the evaluation, and finish the hands-on project.
The clinical portion of the program is 15 separate projects or exercises that cover a specific mechanic or technique. You will complete these projects on an orthodontic typodont. Each project has a coinciding lecture, case illustration and a video demonstrating how to complete the project. Photograph each step of your project completion and upload it to the website for evaluation. After grading, you can download the Verification of Participation certificate for 25 CE credits per session. We are an AGD provider offering a total of 125 hours of continuing education, including 75 participation and 50 lecture hours.
The comprehensive course manual, written by Dr. Robert G. Gerety is over 350 pages and is the basis of our orthodontic education program, Non-Extraction Straight Wire Mechanics. For your convenience, the entire manual is available online for a quick reference whenever and wherever you may need it. When you purchase the online course, we will ship you a hard copy of the manual along with all the materials needed to complete the 15 hands-on projects. These project materials include brackets, bands, archwires, ligatures, appliances, and auxiliary items.
To ensure our online orthodontic students succeed in completing the hands-on projects, we offer an equipment lending program. Without investing in instruments upfront, this allows you to explore orthodontics, complete the clinical projects and decide if orthodontic is for you.
The items available through our Equipment Lending Program are:
We do not charge our students for borrowing the equipment, but we do ask that the students pay for the roundtrip shipping and handling. Simply go to our "Product" page and add it to your shopping cart. We will ship the equipment UPS ground and include a return shipping label for your convenience when you return the equipment. While we welcome all our international students to our online ortho course, we are limiting the Equipment Lending Program to our US doctors.
Our Online ortho course has no expiration dates or deadlines, but we do ask that our students who take advantage of our free equipment lending program return the equipment within 120 days. The equipment lending will be based on availability. Please Click Here to review and download our Equipment Lending Agreement that details the due date, the replacement cost for items not returned, and the approved use of our equipment. To participate in the Lending Program please complete the agreement and return it to our Customer Service Department at customer-service@orthodonticteaching.com.

It is important for students to begin their own cases while taking the course so they can apply the mechanics taught in the program. Assistance with cases is available, including guidance on whether you should treat the case in your office or refer the case. Ask as many questions or submit as many updates for each case as you need to without any additional cost, with no charge per minute or charge per question. Support is provided throughout the completion of each case.
Tuition includes 2 My Cases, which can be submitted online for assistance with case selection, diagnosis, treatment planning, and troubleshooting as the case progresses. A complimentary one-year Premium Membership is also included. The Premium Membership provides access to all areas of the website, the 2 My Cases diagnostic services, viewing 50 cases in Big Bob's Case Library, reviewing articles in the Resource Library, and networking with colleagues in The Forum.
We are available during regular business hours and are committed to assisting with any inquiries or concerns you may have. You can also reach us via email, and we assure you of a prompt response.
The comprehensive, five session (125-hour) seminar series will focus on the principles of Straight Wire Non-Extraction Orthodontics using fixed appliances and a modified Roth Bracket System, which is our philosophy. The program is presented exactly as you would approach treating the patient, from diagnosis and treatment planning to case finishing mechanics. Upon completion of the entire program, participants will have the knowledge and confidence to:
Health History Review
Dental and Myofunctional Exams
Intra and Extra Oral Photography
Diagnostic Study Models (Digital or Impressions)
Cephalogram
Panorex
TMJ Screening
Our goal is to provide you with criteria and guidance for your beginning cases. We want the cases you treat in the beginning to be straightforward and rewarding. We try to avoid cases that are more advanced and offer guidance with your case selection so you will have success and gain confidence.
Our predictable diagnostic system will help doctors avoid cases that have hidden difficulties that manifest during treatment and can discourage a beginning doctor.
Our instructors are here to review your records for case selection and to review and troubleshoot the cases you have in treatment. Our instructors are available to look at your cases during the course and keep you on track with your progress even after the course.
We continually add materials, appliances and mechanics to our program as they become available. It is our objective to start you with the mechanics that are most effective and predictable.
As important as mechanics are to the orthodontic case, choosing the right mechanic is not as important as implementing the right mechanic in the proper sequence. We provide a roadmap for treatment sequencing.
There is an art to case finishing that begins at the start of the case. The amount of time spent fine tuning and case finishing mechanics at the end of the case can be much less when you have followed the road map from the beginning.
Session 1 will cover the initial stages of treatment including proper record taking, cephalometric tracing and diagnosis, case selection, and bracket placement. Once you have completed this session you will have the information and direction that you need to return to your practice and begin gathering the necessary equipment, usually a camera and cephalometer, to start producing the necessary documentation. We suggest involving the entire staff with the implementation of orthodontics into your practice. Review the case selection criteria with your assistants and hygienists so they can be on the lookout for potential cases. Oftentimes, children or relatives of your staff are excellent candidates for your first cases. Phase I and Interceptive Treatment is an ideal place to start learning basic orthodontics and is a tremendous service for the patient as well. Find patients that meet the criteria and get complete documentation on each case or at the very least, pictures, models and current panorex. Share these records with our instructors online and they will confirm your treatment plan and point out any concerns. Now you are on your way!
Session 2 is full of hands-on clinical projects and is chocked full of mechanics and procedures. This is the section where we begin the archwire sequence, teach the different methods of ligating the archwire to the bracket, present auxiliary products and detail when and how they should be used. We will emphasize the mechanics that should be completed in each size wire, when to move to the next size wire and how to effectively move through the basic archwire sequence to level, align and rotate the teeth.
In Session Two we will continue to build on the foundation laid in Session One by introducing Dr. Gerety's archwire sequence; the force systems and ligation methods; the use of the Multi-Distalizing Arch; and the importance of Phase I Interceptive treatment using a fixed technique of brackets and bands with archwires and open coil spring. We will describe in detail the archwire sequence that we have found to be the most successful, how to best form the archwires, the different properties of archwires, and when it is time to move to the next level of treatment. Along with the archwire mechanics we will discuss the types of forces that are appropriate to add, when to add them and how to adapt them. Once you have learned the proper diagnosis and the correct bracket placement the material presented in this session will enable you to begin the treatment sequencing in a predictable and systematic manner.
You are now ready to place initial bands and/or brackets and archwires on your approved patients, especially Phase I Interceptive cases. You will have the information needed to start and finish Phase I cases. Take pictures at each appointment and continue to share them online with our instructors so we can help guide you through your first few cases. Let the course begin to pay for itself now with your new revenue flow!
In Session 3 we will add to our mechanics by addressing single tooth crossbites, cuspid retraction, individual root torque, anterior retraction, impacted cuspids, finishing mechanics and retention. Along with each of the techniques, numerous case presentations can be viewed that illustrate all of the mechanics that are discussed. This session includes the remaining hands-on projects and will discuss the typical mechanics for a comprehensive case. We will complete the archwire sequence using all the techniques and auxiliaries with the archwire size that is indicated for this procedure. We will discuss retention of the cases and what works best for different scenarios. This session brings it all together and you begin to see the big picture.
We will also discuss appliances that we have not previously discussed because they are not routinely used in our treatment plans but will add to your tool belt at the appropriate time. We will demonstrate the use of Rapid Palatal Expansion, Nitanium Palatal Expansion, and the Lip Bumper by a review of cases where the appliances were used.
The great advantage to starting cases early in your program is that you will learn the mechanics and sequencing so much faster if you can apply it clinically on your patients. We compare it to finishing dental school without prepping a vital tooth. Doing the procedures firsthand on a patient is so much more effective and will help reinforce the mechanics and procedures. Another reason to start cases that meet the guidelines is the one-on-one consulting with the instructors to review and guide your cases to completion during the program. Doctors that start cases will excel in the implementation of orthodontics into their practices!
This session is everyone’s favorite because it is all lectures, no clinical projects, and is dedicated solely to Phase I, Interceptive Mixed Dentition Treatments. During this segment of the program we will be discussing the indications for Interceptive Phase I treatment. We will detail our guidelines for intervening with Phase 1 treatment, when to treat, what type of treatment we would recommend and give you some direction on treatment timing and sequencing. Expansion of the arches, upper and lower, using RPE, NPE and Lip Bumpers will be presented. The Reverse Face Mask has a place in orthodontics, and we will teach you the protocol for using the appliance and we will show cases treated with the RFM that are documented into adulthood.
After this session you will be anxious to get your own cases started so you can see the same results for your patients.
This session will cover cases and treatment that is considered more advanced but cases that you will be able to treat in the future. We will be discussing successful management of adult orthodontic cases using our comprehensive treatment, aligner therapy and interproximal reduction. We will then focus on some out of the box mechanics that are outside of our usual treatment protocol including managing high and impacted cuspids, molar uprighting, the CD distalizer technique, Rapid Molar Distalization, using a reverse MDA to correct an anterior crossbite, and treatment of a Class III skeletal and dental case using a reverse face mask.
You have now completed the program and are ready to expand your orthodontic treatment, always keeping in mind that you should choose cases that fall within the parameters of the case selection criteria that we provided and focused on during the course.
Please contact us directly to purchase the Package using the Payment Plan and we will set you up with terms that will fit into your budget. We offer a variety of plans, all with no interest charges. We ask for the first payment at registration, and then a monthly automatic payment until the balance is paid. It's simple and easy!
With this program, there is no need to invest in the cost of orthodontic instruments until you determine if orthodontics is truly something you are going to integrate into your practice.
We do not charge our students for borrowing the equipment, but we do ask that the students pay for the shipping and handling. Simply go to our "Product" page and add it to your shopping cart. For more information visit our News Article section or contact us directly.
