3 Best Ways to Avoid Problems with Your Orthodontic Cases

Modified: July 10, 2017 - 12:38 PM

We wish we could say that all your orthodontic cases will go 100% as you planned, unfortunately, there is no guarantee when treating patients and the best laid plans can go awry.  Since orthodontics consists of so many moving parts and unforeseeable factors, it is inevitable that things may not go as planned some of the time. The good news is there are many things you can do to prepare for the unexpected when things do go wrong. From the experts here at Gerety Orthodontic Seminars, we offer solutions to your problems and likely as not, most of our instructors will have personally experienced the same issues. Our own clinical experience coupled with over 40 years of reviewing thousands and thousands of cases enable us to offer advice from firsthand experience. Here are a few suggestions to prepare you for the unexpected challenges you may experience.

1.Enroll as a Monitor for Additional Orthodontic Training

Once you complete our comprehensive orthodontic course, you have just begun to learn orthodontics.  At Gerety Orthodontic Seminars, we make learning comprehensive orthodontic treatment easier, more convenient and affordable. We are committed to your success and offer you the second year of training at no additional cost to you. Coupled with your initial training sessions, this additional year will give you the opportunity to start and finish cases under our direct supervision. By attending these classroom sessions, you keep yourself in a learning environment, solidifying the information that was presented the previous year.

We stress the case selection criteria, allowing you to begin cases that fit your level of experience. During the programs, we show hundreds of treated cases as examples for you to treat and we will review your records and approve or reject cases that fit the selection criteria.

We have courses for doctors who are interested in classroom learning and for those who have time and travel restrictions; we also have a virtual classroom online. For on-site learners, you can join us in our classrooms located in Tulsa, OK and Nashville, TN. If you choose our online courses, rest assured that this is not a recorded video of a previous classroom session. It is the same presentation (PowerPoint) as the classroom course with scripted audio. The online course is available 24/7/365 so it is totally up to you when you choose to participate. Feel free to join us anytime.

2.Proper Orthodontic Documentation

Another important step to avoid issues with your orthodontic cases is to take a full series of pretreatment records to meet or exceed the standard of care. When you document cases properly, you protect yourself not only from any possible legal claims but you also exhibit a level of professionalism that speaks volumes for your thoroughness and attention to detail.  In addition to the pretreatment records, document each visit thoroughly as well as documenting any issues that were discussed with the parent or patient such as lack of cooperation, broken or lost appliances, poor oral hygiene, late or no show appointments and also the lack of motivation from the patient.

3.Prepare a Thorough and Detailed Ortho Treatment Plan

It is imperative that you present a well thought out and detailed plan of orthodontic treatment for the patient. You should examine each piece of information that is gathered during the diagnostic record taking and implement that information into the selected treatment plan. During your orthodontic training with Gerety Orthodontic Seminars, you will learn the art of treatment planning, sequencing and timing to perfect the ideal treatment plan for each patient.  Following that treatment plan will insure successful completion of the case. If there are unforeseeable issues that prevent adhering to the plan, these changes should be documented and detailed in the patient notes.
