Learn How to Treat and Retain a Diastema at Gerety Orthodontic Seminars

Modified: July 1, 2019 - 09:04 AM

In dentistry, the term used to refer to the spaces between the central incisors is “diastema.” Most parents approach their general dentist with concerns regarding this condition, and how they can help their child. Usually, this spacing is not a major concern, and may not require any orthodontic treatment, but if the spacing is abnormal, this is a different issue. If the spacing is abnormally large and is caused by an abnormal frenum attachment, it should be addressed.  Abnormal spacing can lead to a discrepancy with the upper and lower arch forms and the teeth size.

At Gerety Orthodontic Seminars, we are proud to say that we help general dentists like you learn more about the basics in orthodontics. We have special orthodontic continuing education courses that will guide you further on diastema, and the right approach you can follow to transform the lives of your patients. In Tulsa, we have on-site learning classrooms, and online virtual learning options as well for dentists who cannot make time in their busy schedules.

Understanding the Cause of Spacing/Diastema

Usually, spacing in the dental arch occurs if the teeth are too small for the arch form. Furthermore, spacing in the teeth could develop because of other reasons. Spacing can also occur due to missing teeth. This is most common with the congenitally missing upper lateral incisors. Oftentimes, random spacing can occur due to improper swallowing habits such as a tongue thrust or other common reasons include thumb sucking, lip biting and digit habits that push the teeth forward, which will create gaps.

Sometimes, a diastema would require orthodontic treatment along with cosmetic bonding to close the space. If the diastema is the result of the frenum attachment, then the patient would need a frenectomey to remove the fibrous tissue and muscle attachment. Following orthodontic treatment, it is important to take several steps to ensure the spaces do not appear again.

Bonded Lingual Retainer Will Help

You can use a bonded lingual retainer, which should keep the teeth stable. Use this on the lingual surface of the maxillary incisors by placing a passive thin twisted wire, bonded as gingival as possible to avoid the anterior occlusion.

Distally Tip the Roots

Often, the space between the anterior teeth is related to poor bracket placement. To treat a diastema, place the bracket for more distal root tip. It is important to place all brackets to insure distal root tip.
