Embracing a New Era

Orthodontic Residency vs. Orthodontic Continuing Education

Modified: December 27, 2018 - 08:00 AM

At Gerety Orthodontic Seminars, we know that the dental professional must participate in on-going, top quality continuing education.  This training will allow dentists to reach the highest level of success, in terms of patient satisfaction, the highest treatment standards, as well as profitability.

An Overview of Residency and Continuing Education

Are you considering an orthodontic specialty degree?  Any dentist who considers specializing in orthodontics must apply to one of sixty-seven accredited orthodontic residency programs in the United States.  Two to three years of training are required to earn the orthodontic specialty credentials that will allow the dentists to present themselves to the public as “specialized” to treat patients within the orthodontic field.  A residency program requires full-time physical attendance by the student.

GOS offers another option for the general dentist through enrollment in our orthodontic continuing education programs.  These comprehensive courses provide dentists with the opportunity to expand their services in the area of orthodontic treatment.  Orthodontic courses taught by GOS include the criteria and guidelines for patient selection, which is essential to insure successful treatment in the beginning stages of your education. We will teach the use of dental appliances and all the techniques and skills necessary to treat the majority of patient malocclusions in a typical practice.

The Duration

While some orthodontic continuing education programs last from 18 to 24 months of part-time participation, at GOS we offer a shorter time period to complete the comprehensive program.  Our courses are offered several times during the calendar year from our base in Tulsa, OK.  Our program begins in September and is completed in May of the following year, covering all the material in eight months. Each of the five sessions occurs in three days:  Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The sessions are spaced 6-8 weeks apart.

If your personal situation prevents travel, we also offer you the flexibility of online enrollment where you may participate from the comfort of your home or office.  If there is a conflict with any of the five session dates, you can complete that session online, viewing the same material that was presented in the classroom. Check our website for specific information, and take a virtual tour at Gerety Orthodontic Seminars, www.orthodonticteaching.com .   The testimonials there, along with more than 12,000 satisfied students, will demonstrate that GOS is committed to your professional growth and success.  Our goal is to assist you to meet your professional educational needs in any way we can.

What are the Differences in Knowledge Gained in Residency and Continuing Education?

The time and money invested by the student in a university setting includes more theoretical training, and results include a broader range of mastery of dental products, systems of treatment, and the appliances involved.  However, dentists who choose to enroll in orthodontic continuing programs learn similar in-depth treatment and appliance usage for a narrower – but equally effective -- range of systems and treatment plans.  Continuing education offered by GOS focuses on practical, hands-on learning, with access to our vast case library for a range of treatment protocols. Our focus on diagnostics, technique, and treatment will be immediately put to use in your current dental practice.
