Orthodontics for Kids

Did you know that it is recommended by The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry that parents schedule a dental appointment for their child with the eruption of their first primary tooth and no later than their first birthday?

Routine Dental Checkup for Kids:

Pediatric dentists specialize not only in carefully examining your child’s teeth, but also in removing any plaque by brushing or polishing then applying a topical fluoride treatment to strengthen the enamel.  If the occlusal surfaces of posterior teeth contain hard-to-clean areas, then the application of sealants might be recommended to protect these teeth and prevent decay.

Preventive Dentistry:

Pediatric dentists are trained in methods that promote a child’s awareness of proper brushing and flossing techniques.  This helps to make them aware at an early age of the benefits of a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile.  It is not uncommon for a very young child to have extensive tooth decay, and this will necessitate a treatment plan and course of action to discuss with the parent.

Scheduling Regular Dental Checkups:

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that parents schedule regular six-month dental checkups for their child; however, more frequent or fewer visits may be necessary depending upon the oral health or other potential risk factors. It is important to review the dental and medical histories at every routine checkup.

Treatments provided by Pediatric Dentists:

  • Oral examinations.
  • Preventive oral health care such as cleanings, polishing of teeth and fluoride.
  • Specific recommendations concerning nutrition and diet to prevent tooth decay in children.
  • Habit counseling for children who use a pacifier or have developed a habit of thumb sucking.
  • Cavity removal or repairs, fillings, extractions.
  • Treating malocclusions involving misaligned teeth and arches.
  • Diagnosing and treating oral conditions associated with related health issues:  diabetes, allergies, airway obstruction, and heart defects, etc.
  • Treatment of gum diseases.
  • Administering proper care associated with dental injuries such as jaw fractures or displaced teeth.

A Pediatric dentist is highly trained to treat children in ways that assure comfort and a sense of security.  In order for them to provide “complete” oral health care to your child, it’s a bonus when they are trained and equipped with the skills necessary to offer successful orthodontic treatment.
