One of the most frequently asked questions from parents is often about the space between their child s central incisors which is called a diastema. Occasionally, this spacing does not require orthodontic treatment but more often than not, orthodontic treatment is needed. There are many causes relating to this abnormal spacing. A mismatch between the size of the jaw bones and the size of the teeth can cause either extra space between teeth or crowding of teeth. If the teeth are too small for the jaw bone, spaces between the teeth will occur. If the teeth are too big for the jaw, teeth will be crowded. Spaces develop for a few other reasons as well. Sometimes some teeth are missing or undersized. This happens most often with the upper lateral incisors. That can cause the upper central incisors to develop a space. A diastema also can be caused by an oversized labial frenum. The labial frenum is tissue that normally extends from the inside of your upper lip to the gum just above your two upper front teeth. In some situations, the labial frenum continues to grow and passes between the two front teeth. If this happens, it blocks the ...
As General Dentists, we re often asked what it means when we say we provide comprehensive dental care for our patients. It s a great question and the answer involves more than just the dictionary. At Gerety Orthodontic Seminars, we consider Orthodontic Evaluation part of our comprehensive exam. Nothing in the human body exists or functions in isolation. In comprehensive dental care, we look at the mouth as more than teeth and gums. We include the soft tissues of the surrounding oral cavity and the muscles used for chewing and movement, evaluate for any oral facial habits or abnormalities, classify the dental occlusion, assess the esthetics of the smile and address the patient s chief complaint. Quite often, patients are surprised when a comprehensive exam reveals problems with their occlusion. Some patients come seeking advice for their malocclusion. Typically, there are clinical clues suggesting damage to the dentition and esthetics due to the malocclusion. Uneven wear patterns of the teeth, the way the teeth fit together and function for chewing and swallowing, abnormal lip competence and tongue position as well as irregular overbite and overjet indicate the patient could greatly benefit from Orthodontic Treatment. Gerety Orthodontic Seminars provides advanced training ...

The philosophy and techniques that are taught by Gerety Orthodontic Seminars are predictable and systematic; the human element of the patient comes into play. Patient compliance and cooperation if imperative for successful treatment; after all, the patient does have to show up for appointments. Over the years we have learned that the more we as dentists can perform procedures that are not reliant on the patient, the better the treatment outcome. Thus our reason for employing a fixed technique rather than appliances based on patient cooperation and compliance. We want you to plan for the worst and hope for the best out of the patient. Case Selection Criteria During your classroom sessions as well as the online programs, we provide strict criteria for you to follow to insure you do not begin cases that are outside your skill level. 80 of malocclusions fit into the criteria we provide.
